Frogbit- Hydrocharis morsus-ranae

nursery price is £3 for 5.

Emperor Dragonfly egg laying on FrogbitVery attractive little plant doing best in  shallow water up to 18 inches, 45 cm deep where it will spread over the water surface. It grows in strings and this makes it very easy to extract should you find it being too successful. In the Autumn the plant shrinks to tiny bullet like buds which sink to the bottom, waiting to bob up to the water surface in May,when the water is warm enough to commence growing again. If you have blanket weed you may find the buds caught up in this which can prevent them from reaching the surface.

I find this easy to grow but in  the wild it is an indicator of good water quality, therefore not everyone can grow it without sorting their water quality.

It has small white flowers in high Summer but you would grow it for it's little lily pads and covering ability and the fact that Dragonflies etc love to lay eggs on it. Naturally, any  frogs you may have will peer at you from beneath it on hot Summer days.
 price is per 5
